A parliamentary committee tasked with oversight duties in Marib Governorate continued its work today, Tuesday, holding several meetings with leaders of oil and gas companies and the presidency of Saba Region University, in addition to inspecting the conditions of displaced persons in Al-Jafina and Al-Suwaida camps.
The parliamentary committee, currently visiting Marib Governorate, is headed by MP Abdullah Al-Maqtari, with members including MPs Mansour Al-Hanaq, Abdulrahman Al-Ashbi, Saleh Al-Amri, and Hussein Al-Sawadi.
The committee held separate meetings with Engineer Salem Al-Kaaiti, Executive Director of Safer Exploration and Production Operations Company and Safer Refinery; Engineer Mohsen Bin Wahit, Executive Director of the Yemeni Gas Company; and Abdulqawi Al-Jarf, Deputy Director of the Yemeni Oil Company branch in the governorate. During these meetings, the committee discussed various issues related to financial and administrative conduct within these institutions. They reviewed relevant reports and documents to identify shortcomings and challenges hindering operations, aiming to reactivate the oil sector's role as a pivotal national economic driver.
The parliamentary committee also visited Saba Region University, where they met with the university president, Dr. Mohammed Al-Qudsi, his deputies, and deans of faculties. They presented a brief overview of the university, its faculties, and departments, highlighting the rapid developments the university has witnessed since its establishment in 2016. They noted that the university currently hosts over 19,461 male and female students across 33 academic specializations within seven faculties, in addition to postgraduate programs and specialized scientific centers for languages, academic development, and community service. The committee members commended the academic development of Saba Region University in a record period, appreciating the significant efforts made by the university presidency and faculty members, affirming their full support for this national academic institution to enhance its educational and research role.
On the ground, the committee members conducted field visits to Al-Jafina and Al-Suwaida camps, which shelter tens of thousands of displaced families from various governorates under the control of Houthi terrorist militias. They inspected the conditions of the displaced in both camps, reviewed their humanitarian and living situations, and assessed their basic needs and ways to provide and improve services for them.
They also heard from Saif Muthanna, Director of the Executive Unit for Displaced Persons Camps Management in the governorate, who provided a detailed explanation of the scale of challenges and gaps across various humanitarian sectors, particularly in light of the reduced interventions from many UN and international organizations. Muthanna affirmed that Marib Governorate bears the largest burden in accommodating the displaced, hosting over 73 percent of the total displaced persons in all liberated governorates. He pointed out that Marib continues to receive thousands of new displaced persons daily, which exacerbates the pressure on the local authority's capacity to provide essential services, especially during rainy and stormy seasons.
At the conclusion of the field visits, the parliamentary committee members praised the efforts of the local authority leadership, the Executive Unit for Displaced Persons Camps Management, and all relevant executive offices in the governorate for handling the complex displacement file despite scarce and limited resources. They reaffirmed the Parliament's support for these significant efforts and for enhancing the capabilities of the local authority and its service institutions to enable them to address humanitarian and service challenges, cope with increasing burdens, and ensure the continued provision of essential services to the displaced and the host community in the governorate, which has become a safe haven for hundreds of thousands fleeing the oppression of terrorist militias.
