Presidential Leadership Council Vice President Major General Sultan al-Arada met with Diego Zorella, UN Deputy Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen, to discuss the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen, and the UN's efforts to alleviate the suffering.
During the meeting, VP al-Arada praised the role of the United Nations Office of Humanitarian Coordination in Yemen and its efforts in coordinating humanitarian work and the interventions of all humanitarian partners which helped alleviate the suffering of those displaced and the hosting community.
He emphasized the need for intensified efforts in light of the economic crisis facing the government, the Houthi militia's continued attacks on oil and gas export ports, and the decline in humanitarian funding, which are severely impacting Yemen, particularly Marib, which hosts the largest number of displaced people in the country, with numbers continuing to rise.
Major General al-Arada affirmed the political leadership and local authorities' commitment to strengthening partnerships with UN organizations and providing all necessary support for the success of humanitarian work and interventions that alleviate the suffering of citizens and address the growing basic humanitarian needs.
For his part, Mr. Zorella reaffirmed the UN's ongoing humanitarian action in Yemen and its commitment to responding to the humanitarian plans for the coming year and emergency needs. He noted that OCHA is working to transition humanitarian work from emergency solutions to permanent solutions, particularly for displaced people.
The Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator expressed his appreciation for the local authority's extensive support and efforts to overcome all challenges and facilitate humanitarian work and OCHA's operations in the governorate.
